A busy Monday--but all is well

Bret and I made it out to vote this morning, and I managed to pray an entire rosary while standing in line.

Yesterday was exhausting--my friend Cindy spent Sunday night with us so that she could drive us to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.  We left at 4:45 and made it there by 6:00 a.m.  Dominic was chatty and interested, right up until he put on his hospital gown and we were left to wait for the tardy surgeon for 45 minutes.  He became increasing quiet and still, and it wasn't until we had waited 40 minutes that a nurse brought him a video game to play with.  Well, that changed everything, let me tell you!  I could barely get his attention long enough to give him a kiss before they wheeled him off into surgery.

All went well.  He came out of the anesthesia beautifully, and didn't need any pain medication last night.  He is back to normal today--with frequent reminders from me to take it easy.  No horse-play for a couple of weeks (try telling that to a kid with 3 older brothers!)

As for Sebastian's dental appointment, it turns out that the broken tooth was actually a baby molar, albeit a very large one, so that was good news.  The dentist pulled three baby molars that ought to have fallen out ages ago, and although he was a bit sore last night and needed a little ibuprofen, he hasn't needed anything so far today.

It's a wonder I'm still sane...and more bovine beauty

It's been one of those weeks.  Dreadful computer problems, abysmal heat, myriad frustrations.  In my better moments, I just take a deep breath and thank God for the lessons I need in humility, patience and charity.  In my not-so-good moments, I just sort of fall apart.  I guess I have done quite a bit of both this week.  And I am trying to fight panic over All That Must Get Done with "an attitude of gratitude".  I am indeed grateful.  Grateful that Fiona and her calf seem to be doing well.  Grateful that my butter churn didn't break when it shimmied off the counter and hit the floor.  Grateful that I have been sleeping a bit better this week.  Grateful that the scrap metal guys were able to load the old school bus up from where it has been rooted since well before we bought this place and get it out of here.

Got your attention, eh?  Why did I not photograph the process?  Especially since it's the most exciting thing to happen around here since I had to tow a 300 lb escaped pig back to his pen (I weigh about 105 pounds, so it was an interesting fight).  Why have I not told you before that we had an old, rusting, yellow school bus rooted into our property?  Well, if you think "Redneck Backyard", you probably imagine at least one old vehicle up on blocks.  A school bus, then, would obviously have to belong to the Prince of Rednecks, right?
Really, when we first moved here, I tolerated it because Bret was using it as a storage shed.  But as time went on, I grew to hate it more and more.  Bret finally emptied it and started making phone calls to get it removed.

It's taken us over 6 months to get someone to finally come out and haul it off.  Many times we were told, "Yep, we'll come for it tomorrow," and then no one would show.  No phone call, no excuses.  That's the way it is out here.  Bret was at the point where he'd given up, he had called so many times.  On Tuesday someone from the salvage place came out to take a look and said he'd be back before sundown to get it.  Bret left work early and we waited...and waited...and the sun set.  Yes, I was madder than a hassled hornet, and near tears all the next morning.  About 2 the next day, a truck showed up and AMAZINGLY got the bus into a position to remove, but it began to rain and the ground was too slick to haul it off.  So he went away, promising he'd be back the next day.

Today he returned with help and they got the thing loaded up and out of here!  Yes!  I gave them each an ice-cold beer, stroked their masculine egos telling them what a wonderful job they did, and came back into the house feeling a lot lighter--a busload lighter, at very least.

I don't know how the rest of the week will go, but right now, I'm happy and grateful.

October Baby

October Baby opens nationwide on October 23rd.  Here's a movie I am really looking forward to seeing--and not just because I haven't seen the inside of a movie theater since...hm, was it Passion of the Christ or The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe I last saw...?  Anyway, it looks like a wonderful pro-life film with an incredibly important message.  My dear friend, who is active in Rachel's Vineyard, has already seen it, and cannot praise it highly enough. Please support the makers of this film and check the listings to see when it will be in your area.  Then, go see it.

The news is good!

Gemma is getting better!  As of yesterday she showed signs of finally responding to the shots of antibiotic in the rear end she received for four days in a row.  Her breathing is much improved, and her temperature is staying down.  She is sleeping much better at night.  But it wasn't easy getting her to this point.

Not shown are the shots of antibiotics and steroids she has had to endure, not to mention all the testing, listed in the post below.

She still has congestion, diarrhea, diaper rash, thrush and fluid in her ears, and is still refusing to eat and drink (there may still be some infection on her tonsils).  She has lost 3 lbs. and we have to sort of distract her to get a mouthful of cottage cheese into her.  But she is no longer dangerously ill.  The last five days have been the longest month of my life...

She has several more days of antibiotics to do, although no more shots.  And she will need a checkup with Dominic's ENT to look at her tonsils and ears and adenoids.  The good doctor thinks that Dominic may have been the bug-carrier, but he got only an ear infection.  His responded to the amoxicillin.  I suppose somewhere along the line it could have mutated.  I don't really know.

I feel so grateful to the doctors and nurses at our little clinic.  They were all so kind and concerned about Gemma, and so happy to see her getting better.  Life is good...God is good...

Many, many thanks to all those who prayed for Gemma and for me.  Your prayers and your emails were a comfort and meant so much to me.

Update on Madeline Therese, January 28th

Thank you to all of you who are praying for little Madeline Therese.  I talked to Cindy this afternoon, and she related to me that Maddie is doing really well for one who entered the world so early.  She is up to 2 lbs. now, and as of tonight should be taking 10cc of mommy's milk every three hours.  She will be getting a chest x-ray tomorrow and there is a chance she may need blood (I guess the bit they have to take for tests can be a bit much for a little body), but all in all things are looking good.  Cindy said it is hard to see all the little ones in the NICU who have real problems, and she is relieved that Madeline just seems to need to grow.

But as she pointed out, things can go downhill very suddenly, and so your prayers are still desired and greatly appreciated.

Now pray me through this coming winter storm so that I can get up there take pictures of her to post here on Sunday!

Welcome, Anna Grace!

My friend Marilyn has had her little girl, and she is beautiful! Like me, Marilyn has four boys sandwiched between her eldest girl and her youngest, so a little girl is a welcome change for both of us!

See beautiful Anna Grace and her equally beautiful family here.

Our Holy Father sets Pelosi straight

Any more "ardent Catholics" out there in need of a crash-course in Catholic teaching? Here's the article I read from the Catholic News Agency.
