Yarn Along--hats, because they are easy

I am joining in Ginny's Yarn Along again this week.  I have been trying to knit new hats for the children, and I have requests for fingerless mitts and cowls as well.  It's a lot less pressure than trying to do six sweaters in six months, as I did last year (I managed five).  With schooling five of my six kids this year, knitting time is at a premium, so all the lovely sweater and shawl patterns will have to wait.  Unless I can squeeze one in for Gemma...

The first hat is called Graham, and the pattern is here.  Very easy and satisfying, but I need to do it with a softer yarn, or perhaps a thinner yarn and larger needles, as I want it to "drape" a bit better.  It's a bit too stiff.  I love the pattern and will be using it again.

I will also be making another Ribbed Watchman's Cap.  I knit it up in some leftover Cascade Eco Wool, and it turned out perfectly.  Thank you, Adrian, for agreeing to model your brothers' hats for the photos (Adrian wants a slouchy hat in black merino).

As for the reading, I really haven't done any this past week, other than reading a short story of Una's I'm editing, and reading aloud to the big boys from Christians Courageous.

Hope I'll be able to stop by and see what you are knitting and reading.  Does't the approach of autumn make you want to do nothing but knit and read (and maybe bake)?

  6. Mittens, cowls, hats... all good for instant gratification (well, maybe not instant, but definitely less time than a sweater). Some of my favorite things to knit!

  10. I'm a Catholic homeschooling mom, too. This year I'm teaching four out of my five--the oldest is a sophomore in college. So, I can relate to knitting time being at a premium!

I like your hats--great styles and colors. I've bookmarked the pattern called Graham.

  11. Oh! Such great hats! The chilly weather had me stopping by the sale aisle to see if any wool was there. Yeah! We loaded up the cart with dreams of sweaters, hats, gloves, anything wool! Can't wait to get started!
