Yarn Along--keeping warm

It has been bitterly cold here lately (alright, readers from Canada and the Northeast, don't laugh--temperatures in the teens and twenties is really cold for middle Tennessee!), and being of a frugal nature, I am not cranking up the thermostat, but am dressing in layers about the house and drinking lots of hot tea.  I am prepared to work with fingerless gloves on if I must, although I admittedly feel a bit like Bob Cratchit in the office of Ebenezer Scrooge when I do.

Joining in for Ginny's Yarn Along again this week.  After frogging last week's start on this lovely combination of yarns, I cast on again, having decided to make this lovely pixie bonnet for Gemma.  The last hat I made for her turned out too small (she has a somewhat big head apparently), and so even though she has "boughten" one, I figure she ought to have one from Mama.  I can't describe how squishy and lovely the knit yarn is.  I only hate shedding the light mohair on my black sweaters!

I am going to try to squeeze in some fiction reading.  I haven't read The Mayor of Casterbridge since, oh, tenth grade I think.  I recall hating it in the first few chapters, thinking how dull it was, and how it just seemed to go on and on.  By the end of the book I could only sigh with the happy satisfaction of one who has just eaten a favorite  confection, still wishing that there was a bit more.  The story, although I recall little of it, was so atmospheric...I could picture everything and everyone so clearly.

I can't wait to see what everyone is knitting and reading this week...hope those of you in the colder parts are keeping warm and cozy...

  1. That is a beautiful color! There is nothing like a good book... I keep whatever I am reading with me always, so I can steal little moments here and there. My oldest son is always giving me books that he thinks might interest me... he usually makes wonderful choices.

Have a good day! Stay warm! +JMJ+

  2. Gorgeous, fuzzy yarn!

I haven't read Casterbridge, but I saw the movie---it was very hopeless, I thought.

  4. I love that yarn, what a gorgeous color! I'm going to have to give that pixie hat a whirl. I just knitted up one from a similar pattern and it was way too big. :(

  6. What lovely, yummy yarn. I still have a hat to make for my little one.

We are dressing in layers as well. Lots of mama made wool layers. It's good to keep warm.

  12. Oh that pixie bonnet is cute! Thanks for sharing the pattern link. I can't wait to start knitting Sweetpea's. I wish it was that warm up here in Canada. Today is -30C and the rabbits' heated water bottles are freezing... akk!

  13. I find Thomas Hardy very depressing. I studied him in depth for Grade 12 and the UK equivalent of AP. Tess of the d'Urbervilles was my preferred one. Steve's was Return of the Native. The absolute worst was Jude the Obscure. As the comment above said "hopeless" is how I would describe Hardy.

Abby is getting back to knitting - crochet is her preferred yarn craft. (she made me the cutest hat for my birthday - and Anna the most edible pink hat and scarf set) She wants to make socks.

  14. That bonnet is going to be beautiful. I've never read that book or even heard of it. I'll definitely have to check it out.

  15. I'll agree that Hardy is gloomy. Perhaps that was well suited to my teenage moroseness, and perhaps I will get halfway through and find it too dreadfully dreary to go on with. But I like the idea of re-reading books I read in my youth and seeing whether time, age and experience have altered my tastes and perspective.

I have such difficulty finding time to read anyway, it may be that I have bitten off more than I can chew with this one...
