Some days are tough...

...and it is too early in the day to have a glass of wine.

Dominic is yelling and sounds amazingly like a chimpanzee screaming at a leopard.  Or maybe several chimpanzees.

Adrian is singing in that whiskey-and-cigar voice of his at the top of his lungs and sounds a bit like Gimli the dwarf after a few ales.

Gemma has a rash on her neck and is scratching as if she has fleas.  And she wants me to pick her up.

Gabriel is sulky.  He doesn't like math.

Sebastian is exasperated with handwriting.  He gets upset because he cannot make his handwriting look like the printed example.  I tell him that I am incapable of that feat myself, but it makes no difference.

The Big Boys' room is carpeted with Legos.  I tell them to clean it up, and they do--about 4 times a day.  I haven't been able to vacuum in there for the last 3 weeks.

It is mid-afternoon and there are still breakfast dishes in the sink, unfolded laundry--from yesterday--on the bed, and my gosh, when was the last time someone swept under the table?  Yesterday?  It looks like it hasn't been done in weeks!

I still have writing work to do with the boys, dinner to think about and--whoops--I forgot to do reading with Adrian.

In the back of my mind is the need for a menu plan, a lesson plan, a curriculum list for the year ahead, the ironing piled up, the dirty kitchen floor and the nagging feeling that I have forgotten something important I was supposed to do.

I am brought out of my reverie by Dominic, shrieking like a freaked-out chimp again...

How early is too early for a glass of wine...?

Oh, boy can I relate, my children haven't been getting along and the noise level is such that I can't hear myself think. Your Godson just came through stomping and singing bam bam or something to that effect. Maybe it's the nasty cold weather we are having here in KY and TN. I sure hope it clears up soon.

    LOve and prayers,
    Cindy

  3. Well, my husband always says anytime after noon is fine. He backs this up with scripture: At Pentecost when the Apostles spoke in tongues the crowds said they were drunk, but Peter responded that it was only nine in the morning so that wasn't possible. So morning is out but anytime after that is sanctioned by Scripture. Although we had a friend who lived in Portugal for awhile working as a field laborer. He said the common early breakfast among the laborers was a hunk of bread and some cheap wine. You do what you have to do to get through the day... You could hide in your room for a bit with some knitting and teeny bit of wine.

  4. Mom2Seven, that's funny!

Katherine, I like your husband's thinking. My own rule has always been to wait until after three O'clock, at least on a weekday, and then to have a glass or two of heavily adulterated wine while making dinner (my cheap wine or homemade vintage need to be cut with cran-raspberry juice to be palatable!). It makes dinner preparation so much more enjoyable!

  6. Lunch is my rule for wine. I usually like to have something to eat with my wine and if lunch comes at 10:30 or 11 then so be it. lol

  9. This is going to be after a few more kids, I'm sure of it. Totally acceptable to have wine with lunch on a day like this. People have beer with lunch, right? Or on special occasions, we have a "champagne breakfast." Declare it a special occasion! :) Thanks for visiting my blog. I know I'm going to enjoy yours!
