Monday Morning Musings--May 31st, 2010

Right now... 6:33 a.m., and unbelievably, everyone is asleep still but for myself and Bret, who is out milking.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the sky is dark and overcast with clouds, hence the bedrooms are darker.  Whatever the cause, I rather like it!

This past weekend... was beautiful, joyful, sad.  On Saturday we went to an Ordination Mass at the Chapel of Divine Mercy.  The Fathers of Mercy gained a priest and two Deacons this weekend, all of them wonderful, young, pious men.  It was a beautiful Mass, with Bishop David Choby, the Bishop of the Nashville, presiding over the ordination.  I can't help but get choked up every time we sing the Litany of Saints.  I didn't actually do a count, but there were more than 30 priests present for certain, and a number of religious from out of town.  And best of all, we can look forward to the ordination of two more priests next year!  Unfortunately, photo-taking wasn't permitted.  I am sure there will be photos on the Fathers of Mercy website shortly.

All this joy was tempered when we came home to find that one of our pups (Shiloh, the pretty, white one), who had been looking very poorly that morning, was looking very, very poorly upon our return home.    We are certain that it was an obstruction of the bowel (the pups eat everything, including many things that are not meant to be eaten), and he really was at the point of no return.  Bret had to bury him in the afternoon.  I was grateful that Una was spending the night at a friend's house, and that I had warned her that morning to prepare for the worst, since Shiloh was doing so poorly.  Of the two dogs, Shiloh was the easier to be around, but he was so aloof that I think he would have been difficult to train, unlike Max, who is unruly, but who lives and breathes for us.  Bret was a little annoyed that the dog had to die after being neutered and vaccinated...

Sunday I managed to go to confession for the third straight week in a row.  Really makes you aware of habitual sins when you go regularly!  The Mass was beautiful because there were still so many priests, plus all the seminarians who are home for the summer, and it being a solemnity.

Some plans for this week:  School (although not today), window washing (getting to the point where I can't see through the finger-marks and smears), making granola, talking to the kids about the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is coming up this Sunday, and perhaps finding a good, fun craft for it.

If I can find some time for myself, I want to... finish Una's period dress.  I had cut the fabric for the skirt in the wrong direction, but thankfully Walmart still had the fabric and I picked up another 2.5 yards of it on Saturday.  I also want to finish Gemma's sweater.  I'm halfway done with one sleeve, so 1 1/2 yet to go.  I have a pattern for a birthday bib I want to knit next.

Special prayer intentions:  For the newly ordained, certainly.  That we will find another dog who will be a friend for Max (he's an outdoor pet, so we really want him to have some canine company, otherwise he may wander off in search of it, as country dogs are prone to do); for the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of my family.  And for another nice bit of work for Bret.

Something that makes me smile:  Gemma, hanging out with her Star Wars-obsessed brothers.

  1. So sorry about your puppy. We are pet lovers, and that unavoidably means experiencing loss... however, it never gets any easier. I love all our pets, but it will be extremely difficult for me when the day comes that we lose our Pug... my eighth child! Prayers for the family! +JMJ+

  2. I'm so sorry to hear about Shiloh! But that's wonderful news about the Fathers of Mercy - one of these days after our little boy is born, Derek and I are going to make a little "pilgrimage" to see the Fathers of Mercy, then Casa Maria and the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament!
