The first day back at school...

...was bloody awful! Belligerent, sulky kids, unscheduled disasters, bone-crushing exhaustion and body aches (my immune system is obviously doing battle with some bug) combined to make the day most unpleasant. If the Enemy himself had plotted it out, he couldn't have done much better to make it a drudgery and nuisance. Dominic redecorated the dining room in "Twenty-First Century Sticky", by splashing hot chocolate, complete with half-melted marshmallows, across the table and onto the chairs and floor. Wiping down all the furniture and mopping the floors hadn't really been on the schedule...

Today was better--somewhat. The kids were a bit less obstinate, and I felt a bit less drained. We got school done, the house tidy, diapers folded and a meal on the table. Everyone helped to clean up after dinner so that I didn't have to spend 3o minutes or more doing it all myself.

I tell people that really I am fundamentally lazy...I do a lot and I rarely rest, but in my heart I am always yearning to sit around and play. I want to just read and do crafts and mess around with the kids. All the grownup stuff is such a drag! Sometimes I feel like a kid playing house, and I just want to quit and play something else...

  1. I'm lazy on the inside too. I do what I have to because no one else is going to do it, and if it doesn't get done I think I'd lose my mind, but if I could just sit around for a few days and do nothing...oh the bliss. :) I'm sorry you had a rough start to your lessons, hopefully everything will fall back into it's normal routine quickly. My kids prefer post modern sticky via maple syrup on the table and in their hair. :)

  2. I LOVE your honesty! And, I really liked what you said about feeling like a kid playing house who would now like to quit and play something else! A well needed chuckle on my end! Hope the week continues to improve. We will not start back to school until next week, and I am anticipating after having the break, we will most likely have a bumpy start!
    Peace!!! JMJ

  3. Dear Nadja,
Don't feel too bad I have had more of these type of days than I can think of. I pray you are not getting sick though!
I, like you would rather play with the children and do crafts and of course read. Dosen't this count as education for the children as well as us?? LOL.
I am praying your week gets better.
We are on holidays until February here.
    God Bless

  4. Sometimes I do just that. It is great to do things we enjoy, too. I love to stop and play Monopoly with the kids, or color, or sew.

  5. >> tell people that really I am fundamentally lazy...I do a lot and I rarely rest, but in my heart I am always yearning to sit around and play. << Can I come over and be lazy with you at your house? I KNOW I'm truly a lazy person, too, but my family doesn't believe me so I never get a chance to prove it!!!

  6. Sometimes (like almost every day) I want to quit and play something else too. It'll get better when the spring comes and we don't all have to be cooped up in the house together. That's what I'm telling myself, at least. You can tell yourself that too - I don't mind if you borrow one of my coping devices. :D

  7. Drat! I do wish we weren't spread out all over the country as we are. I would love to have an afternoon--no, a whole weekend--of leaving our kids with their capable dads and sitting about talking over tea/coffee/hot chocolate/books/knitting/whatever. And there would have to be maid service and catering!

  8. I love the "...bloody awful" - I thought I was the only person who said that!!! I had to give it up tho' - with all the Brits visiting, and I can't blame school for teaching the children that...
