Our bovines...and some chickens

Since I'm going nuts trying to do everything I can and then some before we begin school next week, I obviously have less time for thoughtful, lengthy posts. On the agenda: lesson plans, menu plans, shopping list, cleaning the school room and organizing my "teacher" cabinet, haircuts for my two youngest and shaggiest boys. Before Monday.

It must be bliss to be an "unschooler"...I just couldn't handle the lack of structure. As is I have to fight the urge to schedule every lesson for the entire quarter all at once. I started out homeschooling like that and found that unexpected events threw me into a tailspin. I need to find a balance between structure and flexibility. I need the suspension bridge of home education.

Anyway, if a picture is worth a thousand words, here are a few thousand words. Mainly for Danette : )

Here is our year old Jersey heifer, Naomi, with her mom, NualaHere is Naomi again, this time with T-bone, our Longhorn/Hereford steerAnd here are our Jersey Giant pullets and cockerels

  1. OOOOO she is soooo pretty... a sweet little Jersy was always my dream cow-until the research :)-I really really am getting impatient for some MILK after all this cow-care! I did end up choosing our Dexters by who looked most like a Jersey! She know she is pretty-she pranced up to you for that photo didn't she?

Do you like your Jersey Giants? We have mostly Dorkings for the main flock with some brown and black leghorns to fill in on the egg-laying end when the Dorkee's go broody. I have some Buff Catalanas that were "filler chicks" in my order too--NO IDEA why I need chickens known for heat tolerance in MN! :D
Those Jerseys are sure nice-looking-both the big ones AND the small!

  2. The Jersey giants haven't started to lay yet, so I don't know how well I like them, although they are a calm and gentle breed. We had Buff Orpingtons and Light Brahmas before, and I liked the latter very much. I just didn't want to raise chicks this time, as we needed some layers, and my friend Deb at Garnett Family Farm had these pullets locally.

I love our Jersey girls. I'm getting a cheese press this month to make better use of all the extra milk!

  3. OOOH! How beautiful! Thank you for the pictures! What a beautiful way to raise a family. I am sure that is the way God intended it to be.
