Yarn Along--one done, one nearly done

Here I am, taking part in Ginny's Yarn Along again this week, but finally with a finished--well, very nearly finished--cardigan to show!  I'll be looking for some small wooden buttons today, and I am going to needle-felt some mushrooms onto it, as I did with last year's autumn/winter cardigan (yes, I have a thing for mushrooms.  And hedgehogs, and gnomes.  So sue me...)

I have the stitches all picked up for the button band on Una's Sweet Peasy as well, but I need to sit with a notepad and work out the holes, since I want the buttons to go all the way down.  What is it with cardigans nowadays?  Why only two or three buttons?  I mean, that is fine for a summer sweater, but I really prefer my tummy to get some coverage as well!

I still have An Exorcist Tells His Story on the bedside, and I read a bit as I am able.  But I am back to perusing Books Children Love for some ideas to get the boys reading more.  Sebastian is not so difficult, but Gabriel is one of those "I Hate Reading" kids.  I'm not too worried, as Una, who is a speed-reader and consumes books like popcorn, once said that, too.

I am also trying to read Una's new favorite book (well, after the Lord of the Rings trilogy), The Shadow of the Bear.  It is youth fiction, but as I was in NYC at the same age as Blanche, one of the characters, I thought I would give it a read.

Hopefully I will be done with Una's cardigan by the next Yarn Along and casting on my last cardigan of six I am knitting for Christmas.  If I can get that done quickly, I might have a couple of weeks left over for hats and scarves!

  1. Consuming books like popcorn - I'm going to use that line :) Good luck finding some good reads.
I love the cardigan! It's gorgeous.

  2. Nadja, Congratulations! The cardigan looks lovely.
I have a child that didn't like to read either and now he too goes through books faster than I can keep up. Seeing him reading makes my heart happy!

  3. The cardigan is lovely! Wow--six cardigans. I am impressed. I need to pickup my knitting needles more frequently to finish the afghan I am working on.

My son was slow in picking up reading. Eventually I began reading the same books he needed to read for school, discussing them with him. We read the first three or four Harry Potter books-- and then stopped when the story became darker.

  4. I like that analogy to popcorn too. The sweater looks wonderful! Feels so nice to get something completed, yes? I think I should look at that book as well - I have one that needs to start consuming books like popcorn.

  7. Your sweater came out beautifully! The lace along the neckline is really gorgeous. I can't wait to see the needle felted embellishments too.

  9. Actually, Cheryl, as soon as the Christmas knitting is done, I'm starting on the spring knitting, and hopefully a lot more sewing. I am hoping to finally knit something for myself, which I have never done!

  10. My 16 year old daughter and I really enjoyed the Shadow if the Bear. That was my favorite of the series. The only book by that author that I DO NOT recommend is the Midnight Dancers one. VERY defiant characters (daughters) placing themselves continually in near occasions of sin. The only endearing character is the young man who protects them. The main female character is horrible. IMO. My daughter didn't like that one very well either.

  12. The sweater is very nice. I'd love to make myself a sweater someday. It's on my knitting to-do list. You did a very nice job with that needle felting. I hope you post pictures when this one is done.
