Yarn Along--Hateful Hat

I loooove this hat.  The blend of cashmere, silk and mohair make it so warm and squishy.  And it was my first try at the kitchener stitch, which I had dreaded so much, but went off so well that I did it while watching a Horatio Hornblower movie with the family.  But Gemma hates it.  I'm not sure, but it may be the chin strap she hates.  She happily wears her $1 acrylic hat from Wal-Mart, and the little cotton pixie hat sewn from an old pair of Una's leggings.  But not this.  This is how she feels about the luxurious Pixie Bonnet:

(That's not filth on the mirror, by the way.  It's an antique, and it is all spotty.  Just so you know...)

Maybe if I try it on her outside when it is cold and windy, she may feel differently.  If not, look for it in our future Etsy shop...

I will be perusing my stash of yarn and Ravelry to decide what to cast on next...

I have all but abandoned the Thomas Hardy novel I was reading last week.  I should have taken note of all those folks telling me how depressing Hardy is.  Mid-January is not the time to read him, as things are gloomy enough here, what with the cold, wet weather, post-holiday letdown making the kids beastly, and that thing that happens to homeschoolers around this time of year, when we just feel like chucking it all.  So I am reading helpful hints to get back on track.

This post comes to you courtesy of Ginny's Yarn Along.  I look forward to seeing what is on your bedside table and on your needles!

  1. Oh the hat is lovely! Isn't it strange what our children like and dislike? Hard to figure it out sometimes.

    Blessings, Elizabeth

  3. Despite the tearful expression, your hat is wonderful! Your stitches look amazingly even -- something I'm desperately working on. Great job!

  7. I had a similar experience when knitting Miss Dashwood for my daughter. http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTmissdashwood.html

A cuter hat you never saw, and I knit it in cashmere. I have on picture of her wearing it and she is in tears!

  9. What an adorable picture! aybe she'll change her mind, I'll keep my fingers crossed! (What if you lined it with an old t-shirt, would she like it better then?)

  10. That's happened with my daughter before! I've found that adding some "bling" like an embroidered or crocheted flower with a shiny button in the center helps. I think it's just darling!

  11. Sweet pixie hat! Maybe she will warm up to it, before she grows out of it ;-)

I have that gem of a book, and I don't even homeschool (yet anyway)! It has so many good ideas, though.

  13. I must laugh and cry with you at the same time...lol...the hat is exquisite....and I've had all my children react the same way to something I've made them at one time or the other, including the teenagers...it's hard to accept the rejection but you learned a new skill! and made a beautiful hat.

  14. Oh, such a sweet hat - and little girl in it despite the tears. Hopefully she changes her mind!
I can't decide how I feel about kitchener stitch - sometimes it goes beautifully and sometimes I get all confused and it looks awful! Practice makes perfect, I guess.
I love Hardy - but yes, VERY depressing!

  21. What a shame that she doesn't dig her new hat. It's so pretty! I love the color. The title of your post was pretty funny. I had to click and read just to find out the back story on the "hateful hat".

  24. aw, don't chuck it ALL!
    just maybe the depressing novel...
i LOVE that pic of gemma. what an abusive mother you are for "forcing" her to wear that darling hat!
it is so funny to see what makes some children cry...my kids never like itchy wooly things. or things that went under the chin. who knows what she is thinking!
hope otherwise that all is well with you. feeling better? besides the blahs...take care, friend. spring is right around the corner!
    xo.

  26. Such a cute hat but you could be right about the strap under her chin. My little guy HATES having his hats tied on or even his coat done right up to his chin. Drives me a little crazy sometimes *grin*. I've been drooling over the knit picks 'chroma' yarn to! So pretty :)
